Getting Your Home Ready for Christmas

Not many people would deny that Christmas is the most widely celebrated annual celebration throughout the world. Even though most people realize that the birth of Jesus didn’t actually occur on the 25th of December, it doesn’t hinder the masses from prioritizing the holiday by spending time with those they love most to memorialize the momentous occasion of Christ’s birth. Although each family has its own traditions for the season, most take much delight in decorating their houses in various ways. Here are a few of the most traditional ways people decorate for Christmas as well as some suggestions that you may have never seen or heard of before.

Christmas Tree

For many families, putting up a Christmas tree in a corner of the lounge is a huge event in which all the members of the household take part. Some prefer a real evergreen tree while others prefer a fake one which can be used every year. The decorations people put on a Christmas tree have changed drastically over the centuries. Hundreds of years ago, handcrafted knick-knacks as well as food items such as nuts and fruit were used to embellish the branches. In modern times, electric lights as well as tinsel and even expensive items such as glass angels and bells are commonly used. Most families wait until all the decorations are put up before they put up a star or an angel at the top of the tree which is to be a reminder of the way shepherds and wise men received guidance to the birth scene of Jesus.

Christmas Traditions

A few other traditional ways people decorate their homes for Christmas include attaching wreaths to their front doors, dangling Christmas stockings above the fireplace or arranging attractive Christmas cards from the past on a side table or on the wall around a doorway. A favourite for many Christian families is to display a nativity scene with baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, the shepherds and the wise men; this helps to keep the main emphasis of Christmas on Jesus rather than the presents and everything that goes with it. Many families enjoy wrapping green and red ribbons around stair banisters, chairs and other furniture while some are sure to take out their Christmas-themed dishes, serviette holders and tablecloths to give the dining room a cheerful touch.

Outside Decorations

As for the outside of the home, some families prefer simple Christmas decorations while others go to extreme lengths to make their house the brightest on the street. Houses will range from still, white lights to red and green blinking lights to rainbow themes which blink in time to the Christmas carols playing in the front garden. Families with small children especially prefer to arrange cardboard cutouts of some of the most popular animated characters from the latest Disney movies, but the most common character presented is Santa Clause along with his reindeer. Many even set up Santa and his sleigh on the rooftop surrounded with Christmas lights. Putting up Christmas lights on the outside of homes and throughout the front garden promote  the common family practice of riding around together in the evenings just to enjoy the assortment of Christmas light displays of various neighborhoods throughout each city.

Family Time

It’s important to remember that it’s not how much money one spends on Christmas decorations, but it’s involvement from all the family that makes it most special. If you didn’t grow up in a family that had its own traditions, take time to ask your immediate family how they want to decorate this year. From the youngest member to the oldest, make sure each person’s ideas count. It will make the season much more unforgettable when your family develops its own unique traditions. Oftentimes inexpensive methods of decorating such as stringing popcorn on the branches of the Christmas tree make better memories than store-bought ornaments.
